Leadership & Professional Experience

Carole Chambers retired as CEO of the West Des Moines Chamber in 2020 after leading the organization’s strategic development and growth for three years. During her tenure, annual revenue growth averaged 22.7%, while the organization expanded staffing and developed a workforce development department that positioned the Chamber for continued success. Before her role at the Chamber, Carole served as Director of Strategic Partnerships for Business Publications Corporation and held several executive leadership positions from 2002 through 2017. Her work focused on business development, strategic partnerships, relationship management, and community engagement.

Community Impact

Carole has spent decades serving as one of Central Iowa’s most respected community connectors. She founded or helped launch numerous initiatives, including the West Des Moines Leadership Academy, Community Connect, Rise Breakfast Club, and MoveHER. Her service extends across numerous nonprofit and civic boards, including the West Des Moines Community Foundation, Microsoft Data Center Advisory Board, Metro Women Connect, and Women Lead Change.

Strategic Partnerships & Philanthropic Engagement

Carole’s greatest strength is her ability to build meaningful relationships that create opportunities for organizations and communities. Her strategic partnership efforts generated millions of dollars in new business opportunities throughout her career. She has played leadership roles in major fundraising and capital campaigns, including Dress for Success Des Moines and the $15 million capital campaign for St. Francis of Assisi. Her experience spans donor engagement, campaign strategy, volunteer mobilization, and community influence.

Sheri McMichael served as Executive Director of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa for 24 years. Under her leadership, Variety expanded its statewide reach, increased fundraising efforts, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced services benefiting children and families throughout Iowa. Sheri was responsible for the overall leadership, management, and growth of the organization, including fundraising, grantmaking, strategic partnerships, program oversight, and community engagement.

Community Impact

Sheri’s impact on Iowa’s children and families has been significant and lasting. During her tenure, Variety raised more than $70 million to support programs and services across the state. She helped lead the development of inclusive playgrounds throughout Iowa and expanded access to specialized mobility equipment for children with disabilities and special needs. Her work has improved opportunities and quality of life for thousands of Iowa children.

Fundraising & Partnership Development

Sheri built strong relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders to increase support for children and families. Her ability to unite people around a shared mission helped expand Variety’s influence and secure resources that strengthened programs across Iowa.
